What is the sound of one hand clapping?

“What is the sound of one hand, clapping?” is an ancient zen koan – a question designed to open the mind of the hearer.

Opening my mind is exactly what I’ll be doing this weekend: I will be “being” in the countryside on a yoga / meditation retreat.

I’m excited at the prospect of a few days of being fully mindful of simple things – like breathing, moving, and chanting, and listening to the tunefulness of the natural rural soundscape. I’m also looking forward, as I do for my regular yoga classes as well, to subjecting myself to the crashing, cleansing crescendo of the symphonic gong. This gong is always sounded for a full few minutes towards the end of the group’s practice, and we become surrounded by reverberating rings of vibration meant to break up the blocked energy patterns of our bodies. Sound healing.

Since I’ll be away this means that you won’t be hearing any new sounds from the Incredible Kaleidophone until after the weekend.

Until then, stay zen.
