Musical rumble strips

Hey folks,

Today’s blog post comes via my father, who mentioned hearing about a highway out in California where grooves were cut in the pavement in such a way that the car plays the William Tell Overture when you drive over it.

Check it out:

.

Apparently this rumble-strip overture was prepared by the Honda Corporation, who were filming a commercial out there. Residents were eventually driven crazy by the song being heard over and over again, so some time in 2008 it was returned to its original state. Too bad.

The highway in Calif. isn’t the only musical road, however. There are similar projects in Holland, Japan, and Korea.

Check out this one from Japan:

Neat, huh?

  1. I love your blog. 😀 What if they made harmonies, by putting a different rumble strip for each tire?? Not that hard… Reminds you what a nosiemaker your car is…

    • OMG that’s such an awesome idea. Now if only we knew some civil engineers….

What do you think?
